There are places in Seychelles that you’ll find on almost every itinerary — and then there are those little pockets of magic that feel as though you’ve stumbled across a secret.
Tucked away in the lush surroundings of Anse Royale on Mahé is one of them: Kot Man-Ya Exotic Flower Garden.
Welcome to my Hidden Gems series, where I take you beyond the beaches and postcard-perfect viewpoints to discover some of the lesser-known places that give Seychelles its character.
A Mini Avatar World in Anse Royale
The moment you step into Kot Man-Ya, the outside world seems to disappear.
Suddenly, you’re surrounded by enormous tropical leaves, delicate ferns and bursts of exotic colour. Reds, oranges, pinks and neon blues appear around every corner, with winding little pathways drawing you farther into the garden.
It almost feels like stepping into a miniature Avatar world — wild, colourful and wonderfully tropical.

The garden is home to more than 250 varieties of tropical plants, including heliconias, gingers, anthuriums, calatheas and other exotic foliage. Interestingly, many of the tropical species represented here have origins stretching from Central and South American rainforests to Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
And despite how immersive it feels, this isn’t an exhausting excursion.
The journey through the garden is relatively short and gentle, with pathways that make it easy to wander at your own pace. That makes it a lovely little stop for families, couples on honeymoon, photographers, nature lovers or simply anyone wanting to discover another side of Mahé.
More than just pretty flowers

One of my favourite things about visiting places like this is discovering the stories behind what you’re looking at.
As you make your way around the garden, your host can introduce you to some of the fascinating plants growing on the land, including fruit trees and plants traditionally valued for medicinal purposes.
Papaya, breadfruit, passion fruit, mango, banana, bilimbi, curry leaves and lemongrass are among the useful plants documented as growing here.
Medicinal plants are also an important part of Seychellois cultural heritage. Knowledge about local plants and their traditional uses has been passed between generations, making gardens like these about much more than beautiful scenery.
It gives your visit a personal, distinctly Seychellois dimension — you leave having learned something rather than simply having walked through another tourist attraction.

This place is an Instagram dream.

Think oversized tropical leaves as natural backdrops, brightly coloured flowers, hidden pathways, layers of green foliage and those gorgeous little corners where the light filters through the leaves just perfectly.
You don’t need a professional camera either. Take your time, look for interesting angles and let the garden provide the backdrop.
A Garden with a story

What makes Kot Man-Ya particularly special is that it isn’t a huge commercial botanical attraction.
The garden opened to the public in 2008 after eight years in the making and forms part of the Anse Royale Ecotourism initiative. Its aim was, in part, to bring tourism experiences closer to the local community.
That intimate scale is precisely what gives it its charm.
It feels personal. Peaceful. A little unexpected.
And that’s exactly what a hidden gem should be.
Before You Go
Kot Man-Ya is located in Les Canelles, Anse Royale, Mahé. Its current official website lists opening hours as 8:00am–5:00pm daily.

I’d allow around an hour so you can wander without rushing, listen to the stories behind the plants and — naturally — stop for plenty of photos.
So, if you’re exploring the south of MahĂ© and fancy swapping the turquoise ocean for a sea of tropical green, add this little garden to your itinerary.
Sometimes the best Seychelles experiences aren’t the ones everyone tells you about. They’re the ones hidden just off the beaten path, waiting for you to find them.
